The perfect summer sandal / Nisolo review

Nisolo ethical Isla sandals review

If there were a pair of sandals that could make you feel like your life is insta-perfect instead of the mess that it actually is, it’s these slides from Nisolo! Read on to see why these ethically-made sandals have become a staple in my summer capsule. And to make things sweeter, there’s a fun *discount* waiting for you at the end!

Nisolo ethical Isla sandals review

Nisolo is an ethical footwear and accessories brand that pays their workers beyond fair trade wages and provides them with healthcare and safe working environments. For transparency, they publish their social impact report on their website.

Some really awesome highlights:

  • At their factory in Peru, all employees work on contract, which guarantees a stable salary, benefits, and consistent work. They are paid 27% above fair wages and Nisolo invests in their financial literacy and personal development, even offering yoga classes!
  • Nisolo also works with partner factories in Mexico, which must meet their strict ethical standards. Workers are also paid at least 27% above fair wages and have safe working conditions and healthcare.
  • Nisolo employs independent artisans in Kenya and Peru, helping to preserve generational craftsmanship and create jobs in low-income regions. I really loved that the social impact report recognizes how artisans are more knowledgeable about the needs of their communities than outside companies or organizations, and that fighting extreme poverty can start with helping artisans build their own businesses.

Nisolo ethical Isla sandals review

I bought the Isla slides in the color latte. It’s the perfect minimal sandal in a creamy, light beige shade of soft leather.

fit: It fits true to size. If you’re in between sizes, size up. I wear a 5.5 – 6 (European size 36) and the 6 fits me well.

comfort: They’re more comfortable than I expected. The leather is a bit stiff at first, but the insole has a bit more cushion than it appears. They require a little bit of breaking in before the leather softens.

Nisolo ethical Isla sandals review

walkability: I made this word up. But anyway, these shoes will do for a fair amount of walking, but are not made for long distances. Because they’re slides, they easily fall off your feet and I can imagine this becoming an issue if you walk very quickly. These are slides for lazy Sunday brunching and browsing bookstores, not for power-walking through the city (although they’d be a great office shoe!).

styling: These slides pair well with anything, making them a perfect addition to a summer capsule wardrobe. Their timeless silhouette also means they’ll stay in style for years to come. Pair with frayed denim for a lunch date with your friends, wide-leg trousers for a casual workday, or a sundress over a swimsuit for a day at the beach.

care: I am so guilty of not taking good care of my shoes, but Nisolo helpfully sends a little card with your purchase detailing how you can care for leather shoes. A cloth bag is also included for storage. I’m definitely going to try my best to care for these babies.

Let me know where else you like to shop sustainably and ethically for shoes, whether it’s at the thrift store or a cool slow fashion brand!

Outfit details:

Dress: Zara (not fair fashion, forgive me)
Earrings: Nisolo soft diamond hoops
Sandals: Nisolo Isla slides in latte

I love that colors and funky patterns are back in style, bc it’s reminding me that fashion can be fun and playful and help us laugh at ourselves. also, bright colors and cute prints help trick my brain into creating serotonin 🙃

Instagram post 18136339873154202 the necklace says it all. happy lunar new year, friends 🎊🧧⁣
⁣
growing up, my family tried so hard to instill a pride in our culture despite living in a country that takes our difference and exoticizes us as perpetual foreigners, that takes our assimilation and weaponizes it against us and other BIPOC communities in the form of the model minority myth.⁣
⁣
it’s never been easy to celebrate my culture without white supremacy casting an ugly shadow over it. but the more I’ve unpacked my internalized racial trauma, the more I’ve been able to find beauty and comfort in where I come from.⁣
⁣
my fellow Asian Americans & diasporic Asians, I hope today is simply full of joy and celebration. ❤️⁣

Instagram post 17906012773720875 for most of my life I was afraid to take up space. talk too loudly. draw too much attention.⁣
⁣
it was ingrained in me, a survival instinct passed down by my refugee parents. with the recent rise in anti-Asian hate crimes, I’m reminded of the quiet suffering my family often chooses to bear in the face of racism, because (they believe) to avoid notice is to avoid being targeted for further violence.⁣
⁣
but silence while we suffer does not protect us; silence while our fellow BIPOC communities suffer does not protect us. it is only by acknowledging the unique yet shared ways we suffer violence at the hands of white supremacy that we can learn to protect each other.⁣
⁣
for my fellow Asian Americans unlearning silence as a survival tactic, I see you. for my non-Asian community speaking up and standing with us, I am so grateful for you.⁣

Instagram post 17866704509292562 slowly reconnecting with my self-care habits ✨⁣
⁣
I’ll admit, I haven’t been taking care of myself (life hasn’t let me). but this week I spent one whole hour doing yoga. I made rainbows in my bedroom. I watered my plants and pulled them back from the brink of death. I wrote in my journal and told myself to STOP FEELING LIKE I HAVE TO DO EVERYTHING, because I don’t! I went outside, enjoyed sunlight, screamed in the car.⁣
⁣
tldr; I’m still stressy & depressy but I‘ve made a little more room for myself to breathe, and I am grateful.⁣

Instagram post 17855992511449166 #BlackHistoryMonth has everything to do with environmentalism—here’s why!⁣
⁣
did you know that Black people founded the environmental justice movement? the movement began with a protest by a predominately Black community in Warren County, North Carolina in 1982.⁣
⁣
from that point, communities and organizations around the country began working together to fight environmental racism.⁣
⁣
Black & Indigenous communities have always been at the forefront of environmentalism! let’s not forget that as we continue this work. ⁣

Instagram post 17904927220720039 #ad // making our new apartment into a home has been a labor of love, and it’s given my partner and I something to look forward to during this difficult time in our lives.⁣
⁣
our latest project: I’ve always wanted a gallery wall and we finally made it happen! (well, my partner made it happen, by actually hanging up everything. I stood there and told him where to put the frames 🙃.) I think it complements our cozy @article sofa perfectly.⁣
⁣
