Hi! So, the world is sort of falling apart around us! I hope you are doing OK, or as well as you can, during this global crisis.
I thought it’d be nice to share some of the things that still bring me joy, and hopefully could also bring you joy.
Like many other millennials now trapped in their homes with nothing but their spiraling anxiety for company, I have downloaded TikTok. No, I have not attempted a dance yet, but I am very happily consuming endless cute animal videos. Honestly, the constant stream of distraction has been really helpful for managing my anxiety.
I have also been re-watching Parks and Rec and immersing myself in the blissfully fictional incompetent government of Pawnee, Indiana.
Of course, I am also reading! Next up in my queue:
I’ve linked to independent bookstores that would really appreciate your support! Check out my Bookshop profile to keep up with my quarantine reads. And I’ve talked about a couple of these books on my IGTV:
DIY & Crafts
While everyone else’s instincts seem to have been to bake bread, mine were to bust out the craft projects I had lying around in the depths of my closet. Just kidding, I started a bunch of new projects and am ignoring all of those half-finished ones.
I’ve made a macrame plant hanger, dabbled in weaving, and most recently have been crocheting a sweater with this Wool and the Gang kit. Full disclosure, the pattern was very confusing so I ended up kind of doing my own thing to achieve the same design. No harm done, though, because it’s still turning out really, really cute.
Food & Recipes
My partner and I already cook pretty often, but this quarantine has given us the, um, opportunity to try some new recipes. Some of my faves:
- Curry Laksa (The Woks of Life)
- Pork Belly and Mushroom Rice Bowl (The Woks of Life) – honestly just as delicious without the pork if you want to make it vegetarian!
And we’ve been baking, too!
- Matcha Mochi Muffins (Tea Squirrel) – SO addicting…I’ve forced my bf to make this three times already
- Lemon Bars (my neighbor tossed us some lemons from her tree, from a safe distance)
- My FAVORITE Chocolate Chunk Cookie Recipe (Smitten Kitchen) – I will use no other chocolate chip cookie recipe
We’ve also begun a new tradition of ‘Take-Out Saturdays.’ Mostly because DoorDash offers free delivery on Saturdays now, but also to support local businesses, and to add a little variety to our routine. Get $15 when you sign up for DoorDash here.
Health & Wellness
I’m really not what you would call an ‘active’ person…but I know from experience that a workout a day keeps the depression away. Being cooped up inside all the time with the world crumbling around us as we hopelessly scroll TikTok is, well, a great recipe for the return of my old friends, anxiety and depression. So I’ve been making an effort to exercise at least three times a week and go on walks outside around the neighborhood.
One upside of social distancing is that my favorite yoga studio in Seattle, The Grinning Yogi, has gone remote, and you can take their classes via Zoom here. (My favorite teacher is Anja!)
I’ve also been doing YouTube workouts and have been enjoying both Natacha Oceane and MadFit, which have great 15-20 minute no-equipment workouts. They’re so fast and work up a sweat, but aren’t so tough that I want to give up.
Lastly, here is a picture of my cats sitting weird. Stay safe!
