Where to shop clean & natural beauty

In my journey of shopping more consciously, I’ve also started to pay attention to what I put on my skin.

Here are some natural and non-toxic beauty brands! They’re all cruelty-free.

Key:

(C) = clean/non-toxic, (N) = natural ingredients, (V) = vegan, (V*) = some vegan products, (W) = woman-owned, (POC) = owned by a person of color

Note: Clean doesn’t necessarily equal natural, and vice versa. Read about the distinction between clean and natural here.

I’ve only included retailers and brands that I have shopped from, or would shop from, myself, and meet my standards for clean and natural beauty. Clean and Natural Beauty Brands:

  • 100% Pure (C/N/V*/W/POC) – makeup, skincare, and hair and body products made from natural ingredients like fruits! I like that they don’t use cheap fillers or thickeners to dilute their products. They donate to various animal welfare and rescue organizations as well as other causes.
    • My recommendations:
      • Anti-Acne Sheet Mask – holy cr*p!! These sustainable bamboo sheet masks really blew me away. I don’t really expect instant gratification from face masks, but my skin instantly looks less inflamed and the next day, I have fewer breakouts. If you have hormonal acne, I’d recommend these for that time of the month; I use them about once a week…usually after I stuff my face with greasy food over the weekend.
  • Biossance (C/V) – clean, plant-based skincare featuring one of my favorite miracle ingredients, squalane; squalane is the best oil for oily, acne-prone skin! They partner with Zagaya, an organization that fights malaria.
  • Clean Beauty at Sephora (C/V*) – All brands with the “Sephora Clean” seal are free of these ingredients: sulfates SLS and SLES, parabens, formaldehydes, formaldehyde-releasing agents, phthalates, mineral oil, retinyl palmitate, oxybenzone, coal tar, hydroquinone, triclosan, and triclocarban. All skincare, makeup and hair brands with the Clean seal have less than one percent synthetic fragrances. ***You may have to double check if these brands are cruelty-free and vegan!
  • COOLA Suncare (C/V) – lightweight, non-toxic sun care products that actually work; great for wearing under makeup or alone.
  • Credo Beauty (C/V*) – online retailer featuring only clean beauty products, carefully vetted for safety. A great place to discover indie clean beauty brands!
  • Farmacy (C/N/not vegan, but only uses honey) – this stuff SAVED my skin! natural skincare products made with their trademark Echinacea GreenEnvy™ honey, which has antimicrobial properties.
    • My recommendations:
  • Onomie (N/V) – all natural makeup products that double as skincare. 1% is donated towards sponsoring first-generation female high school graduates in low-income countries through She’s the First.
    • My recommendations:
      • Bright Concealing Elixir – brightens the undereye area and is great for layering under concealer, or wearing alone for no makeup days; usage over time is supposed to reduce puffiness and darkness
  • Petit Vour (C/V/W) – monthly subscription box of vegan, cruelty-free, and non-toxic beauty products. This is a great way to discover new brands and try them out without investing in expensive full-sized products!
  • The Ordinary (C/V*) – clinical formulations at ridiculously affordable prices. I love this brand because the focus is on the ingredients, not pretty packaging or marketing. Definitely do some research on how to use multiple formulations together and which ingredients will actually meet your skin’s specific needs; each product page has really good recommendations on what skin issues each product can be used for.

This list will be continually updated as I discover more brands! Let me know if I’m missing any brands you love.
